John W. Baker 1944 -
1970
John Baker has been one of
my heroes for over thirty years. I first learned of John's story while
a
student at Oklahoma
State University.
His story touched my heart and soul. John was a
physical education teacher and coach at Aspen Elementary School in Albuquerque,
New Mexico.
He dedicated his life to "making a difference" in the lives of his
students. His story is told in the book A Shining
Season, written by William Buchanan. It is an AWESOME
story. I encourage you to learn more of the legacy John left for each of
us. And, I encourage you to "make a difference" wherever you
may find yourself and whatever you may do. To learn more about John,
visit the school that was renamed to honor him: John Baker Elementary School,
Albuquerque, New Mexico

John's
Book
On August 19, 2001, I took a trip to Albuquerque
to visit a college friend and her family. While I was there I had the
opportunity to meet Jill Baker- McMullen and her husband, Mike. It was an
honor and a special blessing for me. We spent an afternoon together and
reflected on the influence of John. I had the opportunity to look at old
scrapbooks that John himself had compiled and read a wonderful poem that he
wrote prior to his death. I was very honored to
view a home video of John that was taken when he was in college at UNM.
It was indeed a very special afternoon and one that I will never forget.
Jill has graciously allowed me to add her E-mail address for those of you who
may wish to contact her. NICK1TWH@aol.com
