Lab 8
BIODIVERSITY by Dr. Michael T. Dixon |
|---|
Introduction
Last week, the object of the game "Extinction" was to survive and reproduce better than your opponents without overpopulating. Even when you understood the objective and the rules of the game there was no guarantee that you would win or even survive until the end. Other species provided a constant pressure from competition and predation. The "Environmental Change" cards hit you unexpectedly and sometimes quite hard: famine and pestilence could wipe out your species and human-caused changes could alter or pollute your habitat.
The real world works this way also. Species are in competition with each other for resources. Disease, predation and human activities limit populations and the environment changes. Extinction is discussed in your textbook on pages 301 - 314. Reading those pages will help you prepare for this lab and the pre-lab quiz.
Points for the lab will be earned from a pre-lab quiz, lab activity and a post-lab quiz.
