- Extinct
- A species has gone extinct when the last surviving individual dies. For example, the Passenger Pigeon was the most common species of bird in the U.S when Europeans first arrived. The last one died in 1914.
- Extirpated
- When a species has completely disappeared from an area it is said to be extirpated. Jaguars were once found wild in Texas but they have been extirpated. They are still found in the wild in other areas. Animals kept in captivity do not count as being here naturally.
- Endangered
- Species that are in danger of extinction in the near future. This decision may be made because there are few individuals or because their habitat is at risk.
- Threatened
- A species likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future.
