Website Correlations to Diagnostician Standards

In preparing to begin my first year as a diagnostician, I found that looking for websites that supported the standards at which I am to perform, was very helpful. Many of these sites cover more than one standard, but all can serve as a quick reference when information is needed on the job.

Standard I.  The educational diagnostician understands and applies knowledge of the purpose, philosophy, and legal foundations of evaluation and special education.

http://www.tea.state.tx.us/ This is the website of Texas Education Agency. Here you can find the standards for diagnosticians and other administrative information you may need to complete your certification.

http://www.specialchild.com/index.html This website is for parents of special needs children. It has an information section in which parents can use to look up terms, search for child care, and just about anything else they would want to know about their child. It is a very user friendly site and also has a chat room.

http://www.familyvillage.wisc.edu/index.htmlx This is another website to give to parents of special education children that will be of great wealth and support to them to help them understand and cope with having a child with disabilities.

http://www.tea.state.tx.us/parent_inv/prights.html This site offers parents the option to download "A Parents' Rights Guide."

http://www.fape.org/  Families and Advocates Partnership for Education (FAPE) offers resources for families to help improve the educational goals for children with disabilities.

http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/assment/as600.htm Wow! I love this site.  This is great for beginning diagnosticians like me who need a list of things to follow. This offers tips and suggestions on how to report assessment results to parents.

Standard IV. The educational diagnostician understands and applies knowledge of student assessment and evaluation, program planning, and instructional decision making.

This document will take you step by step through the process of planning for and creating a child's IEP. It discusses the members of the committee, reviewing and revising and even has IEP samples.

Standard V. The educational diagnostician knows eligibility criteria and procedures for identifying students with disabilities and determining the presence of an educational need.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/misunderstoodminds/reading.html Misunderstood Minds is a section of PBS.  It offers simulations for teachers and parents so that they will now what its like for a child with ADD/ADHD to read and passage and remember questions or children with reading difficulties to do a decoding activity. This brings things into a clear light when discussing the needs of a student.

http://www.tea.state.tx.us/special.ed/rules/sbs.html At the TEA website you can find the link for special education rules and regulations. On this site is a wealth of information for anyone interested in special education. One point of interest is the Timeline. It gives a visual for the legal and regulatory timelines followed by special education staff including the diagnostician.

Standard IX. The educational diagnostician addresses students' behavioral and social interaction skills through appropriate assessment, evaluation, planning, and instructional strategies.

Standard X. The educational diagnostician knows and understands appropriate curricula and instructional strategies for individuals with disabilities.

The following website offers products that are available under the realm of assistive technology. Some of the sites also offer tutorials that show you how to use certain material so that it is easier to decide what would be an appropriate selection for a specific child.

http://www.enablemart.com/

http://www.woodlaketechnologies.com/

http://atto.buffalo.edu/

This is only a small part of the special education information that is out on the web to be accessed. However, I feel that these sites would give any beginning or veteran diagnostician an ample amount of supportive resources
