Teachers are always "rethinking" their classroom practices to improve the learning environment for their students. Ideas come from a variety of sources, including textbook support materials, other teachers, and, of course, your own imagination. Unlike past generations of teachers, however, you have another extraordinary source for classroom activities and resources at your disposal to supplement classroom instruction and aid professional development--the Internet. Check out this selection of educational sites on the WWW that include indexes, general education resources, and specific resources for Secondary English. IndexesCMU Poetry Index - Although limited offerings and links, offers some canonical works online The Doucette Index to K-12 Teaching Ideas for Literature - Primarily for teaching ideas found in books, but does provides access to websites that contain useful teaching suggestions related to books for young adults The Education Index - The H. W. Wilson company's index to a variety of educational resources, including secondary English General Education Resources-All have Secondary English ComponentsArmadillo's K-12 WWW Resources - List of resource materials for use in lesson plans or for students to explore Artcom Museum Tour - Online tours of some museums; descriptions of others Ask ERIC - World's largest source of education information Community Learning Network - More than 5,800 annotated links to free resources on educational WWW sites for K-12 teachers who want to integrate technology into their classrooms Educast - Free software that delivers the latest education news, Internet resources, and lesson plans (Only to grade 8) Education World - Database of over 120,000 education-related sites Federal Resources for Educational Excellence - Hundreds of education resources supported by the federal government, including sites and lesson plans Global Schoolhouse - Offers collaborative projects, communication tools, and professional development for using the Web Multicultural Pavilion - "Teachers' Corner" offers teaching tools for multicultural curriculum New York Times - Offers both student and teacher connections, including lesson plans Regional Technology in Education Consortia (R*TEC) - Useful site including www4teachers, a webzine of online resources for teachers by teachers Secondary School Educators - Despite extensive advertising and some subjects that may not be suitable for younger students, site has some useful information Teacher Tools - Teacher resources, many of which are free Techlearning - Offers a variety of resources, including teacher-selected Web sites The Texas Center for Educational Technology (TCET) - Excellent source for technology resources, including professional development and lesson plans from across the state that utilize technology The Texas Education Network (TENET) - Provides useful, up-to-date resources for teachers Secondary EnglishGrammar Safari - Activities for "hunting" and "collecting" examples of words on the www for extending the horizons of grammar beyond traditional texts Great Books Online - Quick access to many basic reference works such as Bartlett's Quotations and American Heritage Book of English Usage, as well as verse, fiction, and nonfiction HyperGrammar - An excellent site for on-line grammar review Labyrinth - resources for medieval studies Merriam-Webster's Dictionary on the Net - Apart from the obvious, the site also offers activities, including word games MLA - Online MLA documentation stylesheet for www sources Mr. William Shakespeare and the Internet - Annotated guide to the scholarly Shakespeare resources available online Prentice Hall School - Support site for textbooks adopted by SAISD for English, grades 9 - 12 Quotations Page - Site for thousands of quotations, as well as quotes for the day and week Research Projects - Terrific site for research subjects and sources Roget's Thesaurus - Site's hypertextual searches help better determine the connotations of words Texas Center for Reading and Language Arts - Site's resources include on-line lesson plans The English Server - A database for collections in the arts and humanities, including freeware and software Vocabulary University - Exercises and activities to supplement classroom and personal vocabulary acquisition |
