On March 5th, 2005 ASU defeated Texas Tech by a score of 15-5 to clinch the Texas Rugby Union Collegiate Division II Championship for the 2nd year in a row. Both state championships mark the first time in TRU history that a true Collegiate Division II team has won the DII championship since the collegiate division was split up into three divisions.

Our technical sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday at the Intramural Fields on the ASU campus. These sessions start at 5 PM and end at around 7 PM. Since rugby is rather new to Americans, we do not require any prior playing knowledge or experience. When you do decide to come out to practice, bring a pair of cleats and a mouth guard.
San Angelo has had a men's rugby team since 1987; in 1995, Chris Fourment and Sean Partee started a university side, Kings Head Rugby. These clubs basically co-existed until 1999 when the men's club was merged with the university team to produce the current Ram Rugby club. Chris Fourment is currently attending medical school and the whereabouts of Sean Partee are unknown. The first year the club managed a respectable even record and they have not looked back since. Two years ago, the club placed 2nd in Texas behind Baylor University, the National Champions that year. Two years ago, the club placed 2nd in Texas again and 3rd in Territorial Competition. The 1st place Texas club went on to take 3rd/4th place in the National Championship. We won the state championship last year. This past year, ASU won the TRU State Championship in DII (see above).
We are very excited about our prospects for this year. We have a great bunch of returning players and we have only lost two starters. We run two sides on our team which means that ASU Rugby now has 30 starting positions open for players that are interested in playing rugby at ASU. To be eligible for our first side, you must have been enrolled in college less than 5 years ago and you must be currently enrolled as a full-time ASU student (there are military and medical exceptions to this rule). You will need to fill out the individual forms at the intramural website as well as the USA Rugby forms (links to both of these are provided below).
This year, we are monitoring the academic progress of our players. Players must hold a current 2.0 GPA the week prior to each competitive cup match. They will verify this by having their professors fill out a grade information form and turning that form into the intramural office at least one week prior to each cup match. The first time their GPA falls below a 2.0, they will need to schedule an appointment with the coach and one of the officers. They will need to establish a plan for bringing their GPA up at this time. The second time that their GPA falls below a 2.0, they will not be eligible to play on the first side.
We want to make sure that prospective players and their parents know that this is not a requirement for non-varsity sports (which our club currently is). We are doing this to make sure that our players get out of ASU what they came here for, a diploma.
