Hello,

The Science Days program is intended to provide elementary students with the opportunity to experience science in an educational setting. It is the goal of this program to get students interested in the sciences early since studies indicate that once students reach the upper elementary grade, it is much harder to stimulate their interest in the sciences. To assure that these students experience the most out of this opportunity, three science departments at Angelo State University are participating in this program.

In the Science Days program, students will be exposed to the Biology department's Natural History collections. These collections demonstrate the variety of wildlife that can be found in the regional area surrounding San Angelo. Students will also be given the opportunity to participate in some hands on science demonstrations that will provide them with a greater, and more compelling, perspective on the sciences. A chemistry and physics magic show will be provided to students to demonstrate more concepts in chemistry and physics. These concepts will be explained at a level that the students can appreciate and understand. Finally, the students will be shown a planetarium program at ASU.

We realize that these activities are diverse and will provide students with a greater appreciation of several fields of science at the same time. I do want to stress that it is important for these students to receive some basic background information that will help compliment what the Science Days program will teach these students.  To this end, I have chosen several activities that will provide these students with an appreciation of some of the basic science concepts prior to having them attend the program.
