ASU Computer Gaming Program in Nation’s Top 50
The computer game development program in Angelo State University’s Computer Science Department has been named one of the 2010 “Top 50 Undergraduate Game Design Programs” in the U.S. by the Princeton Review.
The ASU program was one of 50 chosen from the more than 500 colleges in the U.S. and Canada that offer game development study. The selections were based on a comprehensive survey conducted in 2009-10 of administrators at institutions offering game design coursework and/or degrees. The survey covered areas from academics and faculty credentials to graduates’ employment and career achievements. Criteria also included the quality of the curriculum, faculty, facilities and infrastructure as well as data on scholarships, financial aid and career opportunities.
“We are very excited that ASU is receiving national recognition for our efforts to pioneer a new program of study in game development for computer science students,” said Dr. Tim Roden, head of the Computer Science Department. “The Princeton Review listing will give ASU the national recognition we need to enhance our recruitment. ASU is one of only two Texas public universities that made the list. Combined with the fact that Texas has the third-largest number of computer game development companies in the U.S., we think ASU is positioned to become a leader in educating the next generation of computer game developers.”
This is the second time that Angelo State has been featured by the Princeton Review, also making the publication’s list of the “Best 371 Colleges” nationally for 2010.
This year is the first time Princeton Review has generated a list dedicated to computer game design, and the research was done in conjunction with GamePro magazine. The Top 50 list will appear in the April issue of GamePro andwww.gamepro.com. An article on the new list, including ASU, was published in USA Today.

Computer gaming continues to be one of the fastest growing industries in the world. In 2009, sales of computer gaming hardware and software were expected to reach $75 billion. Responding to this trend, ASU started its computer game development program in 2007 and now offers an entire curriculum supported by the high-tech Entertainment Computing Laboratory. The Computer Science Department also offers Special Academic Scholarships to its majors, and hosts an annual summer Game Development Academy for high school students.
