Sympathy to NIU
The entire Angelo State University community, headed by President Joseph C. Rallo, extends its sympathy to Northern Illinois University and to the families of the students who died in another senseless campus tragedy.
“We all hurt when a sister institution suffers the loss of a student,” Rallo said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Northern Illinois University and to all the Huskies in this time of sorrow and reflection.”
For Rallo, who came to ASU last June from Western Illinois University, the tragedy hit especially close to home as he knows NIU President John G. Peters. On Thursday a lone gunman opened fire in a NIU classroom and killed five students before killing himself. Fifteen more students were wounded.
In the wake of the NIU tragedy, Rallo has asked ASU departments, including the University Police and Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management; to review policies and procedures for handling and responding to any such emergency.
Rallo also encouraged students, faculty and staff to sign up for ASUAlert, which was implemented campus-wide earlier this month to provide emergency communications to the ASU community in case of such an emergency.
ASUAlert
In the event of a campus emergency, ASUAlert will provide real-time notification through campus-wide e-mail and through telephone messages to cellular and other numbers. Everyone is encouraged to participate. To sign up for ASUAlert, visit the ASU home page and click on “Sign up for Emergency Alerts.”
