Summer 2009 ASU Magazine

ASU MagazineThe newly released summer 2009 issue of Angelo State University Magazine examines the university’s pre-health and pre-law programs, profiles several successful graduates of each and recaps numerous honors and awards won by students, faculty and staff this spring.

The cover story takes an in-depth look at ASU’s pre-health program from the perspective of students bound for medical school and faculty who help prepare them for the next step in their journey to become doctors.  The success of the program can be found in its medical school acceptance rate that is far above the state and national averages.  ASU’s Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) that helps lower-income students advance to medical school has become a statewide model.

Graduate profiles include Dr. Shivraj Sohur, a physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital-Harvard Medical School and Dr. Joel Dunnington, a renowned anti-tobacco spokesperson based at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.  Dr. Kevin May, a veterinarian in San Diego who specializes in acupuncture, is also profiled.

“Raising the Bar” outlines the ASU pre-law curriculum with first-hand accounts from students and faculty involved in the program.  Graduate profiles include Guy Choate and Carlos Rodriguez of the local firm Webb, Stokes and Sparks, Brian Shannon, a professor at the Texas Tech University School of Law, and 17th District Judge Melody Wilkinson.

Additionally, the Briefs section details a host of university awards that range from a grant for the Office of Multicultural and Community Relations and top chapter designations for biology and physics student groups to the establishment of the first endowed chair in the College of Nursing and Allied Health and our national champion intramural flag football team.

In the Angelo Staters section, see a summary of the many honors bestowed on ASU faculty, staff and students during the spring semester.  Updates on ASU athletics and Alumni Association news are also included in the latter portion of the magazine.
