Opportunities for Faculty Service

The ASU Opportunities for Faculty Service invites you to consider volunteering to serve on one or more university committees.


 

Academic Excellence Committee

Charge
To solicit and review nominations from academic departments for the Presidential Award and then to nominate recipient to the President.

Selection
Appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Faculty Senate through the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. Faculty members should be appointed from academic departments that are not already represented on the committee. Student representatives are recommended by the Dean of Student Life.

Term
Three-year staggered terms for faculty members. One year term for non-tenured faculty members. Student members serve a one year term.

Academic Integrity Committee

Charge

  1. Help students and faculty resolve disputes or questions concerning academic integrity.
  2. Maintain confidentiality regarding issues discussed by the committee.
  3. Provide information to the ASU community of the Honor Code and proper academic conduct.
  4. Review suggested changes to the Honor Code to reflect recent developments in technology or academic honesty.

Selection
The Academic Integrity Committee is comprised of nine members, including four members appointed by the Faculty Senate and five members appointed by the Student Senate. 

Term
All members serve a one-year term.

Each year the Committee will elect a chair from the student appointees and a vice chair from the faculty appointees.

ADA Committee on Accessibility of Facilities and Services for the Disabled

Charge
To study and make recommendations regarding the University’s services, policies, and practices in order to provide the accessibility of facilities and services to disabled persons on the Angelo State University campus as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (Public Law 101-336).

Selection
Appointed by the President through recommendation to the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations from the Faculty Senate. Students are recommended by the Dean of Student Life.

Admissions Committee

Charge
To monitor annually the academic performance of entering freshmen during the fall semester and make recommendations with respect to University admission standards and policies in light of the year’s experience with freshmen and the enrollment and retention pattern of the University. Recommendations shall be submitted to the President for review by the Administrative Council during the spring of even numbered years when changes for the University’s two-year catalog are being considered.

Selection
Appointed by the President upon recommendation of the Faculty Senate to the Director of Admissions through the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. Membership shall include senior (tenured) faculty members who teach freshman and/or sophomore level courses on a regular basis with at least one faculty member from each of the following groups of disciplines:

  1. Biology, Chemistry, or Physics
  2. Business
  3. English
  4. History or Government
  5. Mathematics
  6. Communication, Mass Media, Psychology, Sociology, or Modern Languages

Athletic Council

Charge
To give direction to men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletic programs and to conduct reviews or studies which are requested by the President.

Campus Safety and Security Committee

Charge
To act in an advisory capacity to appropriate administrative officials; to recommend health, safety, and security policies, practices, and procedures; to report dangerous or potentially dangerous situations and recommend corrective actions.

Appointed by the President upon recommendation to the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations from the Faculty Senate. Students recommended by the Dean of Student Life.

Campus Space Planning Committee

Charge

  1. To develop a process for the permanent assignment of campus space.
  2. To recommend allocation of space based on this process to the President.
  3. To serve as an advisory group to the President and the architectural consultant for the campus master plan.

Appointed by the President upon recommendation from the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Student representatives are recommended by the Dean of Student Life. Faculty representative must be a member of the Faculty Senate.

Carr Academic Scholarship Program Advisory Committee

Charge
To advise the President with regard to the policies and procedures for the administration of the Carr Academic Scholarship Program. Evaluate satisfactory progress appeals.

Committee on Faculty Development and Enrichment Programs

Charge

  1. Assist the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and the President in the planning and administration of faculty development and enrichment programs and activities.
  2. Evaluate faculty proposals for faculty development and enrichment projects and recommend priorities for funding to the President through the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.
  3. To advise the President, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, and the Academic Deans on other opportunities for faculty development and enrichment.

Selection
The Academic Deans and the President of the Faculty Senate are standing members. The Faculty Senate recommends to the President faculty representatives, two from each of the three colleges and one from the School of Education, to serve two-year staggered terms. The Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs appoints the chairperson.

Committee on Student Life

Charge
To recommend basic or general University objectives and policies related to student life and to serve as a forum for discussion of issues in areas of student life.

Selection
Students are recommended to the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations by the Dean of Student Life with advice of the Student Senate and other student organizations designated by the Dean of Student Life. Faculty are recommended by the Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs with advice of Faculty Senate.

Term
Five-year staggered terms for tenured faculty members (subject to annual reappointment); One year for non-tenured faculty members and student members.

Core Curriculum Committee

Charge
To study the core curriculum and related general education considerations and make recommendations to the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs for the University’s core curriculum.

Selection
Appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Faculty Senate through the Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. Chair will be selected by committee members at the first meeting. Student representatives are recommended by the Dean of Student Life.

Health Services Committee

Charge
To provide oversight and input into the ASU Health Services program.

Selection
Students recommended to the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations by the Dean of Student Life with the advice of the Student Senate President and Student Senate confirmation; Administrators selected by virtue of office held, and faculty members are recommended by the Faculty Senate.

Term
Administrative positions are standing, all faculty and students serve a one-year term.

Homecoming Steering Committee

Charge
To develop plans and coordinate all Homecoming activities.

Selection
Students are recommended to the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations by the Dean of Student Life with advice of the Student Senate and other student organizations designated by the Dean of Student Life. Members of the Alumni Association Board appointed by the President of the Alumni Association

Housing Committee

Charge
To make recommendations to the President on housing policy and serve as appeals committee for review of housing decisions made by the Director of Residential Programs.

The Dean of Student Life recommends students through the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations to the President. The Faculty Senate recommends faculty through the Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs to the President.

Institutional Effectiveness Advisory Committee

Charge
Coordinate the Institutional Effectiveness/Assessment process

Selection
Faculty members are nominated by the Faculty Senate through the Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs to the President so that two members from each college serve. Student members are nominated by the Student Senate. Administrative members are nominated by their respective vice presidents.

Term
Two-years. Students serve a one-year term. One-year for non-tenured faculty members.

Judicial Board

Charge
To adjudicate occurrences of student misconduct.

Selection
The chairperson is a standing appointment made by the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations and is subject to annual review. Faculty members are appointed by the Faculty Senate from nominations submitted by each academic college and the Graduate School. Student members are appointed by the Student Senate from nominations submitted by each academic college and the Graduate School. There is a member from each college and the Graduate School and one at-large member selected by the Student Senate.

Term
Appointments are scheduled so that the terms of no more than one-half of the membership will expire each year. One year terms for non-tenured faculty members.

Library Committee

Charge
To allocate, among various academic disciplines, funds appropriated by the Legislature for purchase of books and materials.

Selection
Faculty are appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Faculty Senate to the Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. Students are recommended by the Dean of Student Life.

Term
Three-year staggered terms for tenured faculty members. Students serve one-year terms. One-year appointments for non-tenured faculty members.

Optional Retirement Program Committee

Charge
To recommend to the President a selection of at least four Optional Retirement and Tax-Sheltered Annuity Program carriers which are qualified and admitted to do business in Texas.

Student Fee Advisory Committee

Charge
To assist in preparing recommendations to the President for the expenditure of student fees and related income in connection with the preparation of the budget for Non-Pledged Auxiliary Enterprises.

Dean of Student Life and three faculty members or Deans are recommended by the Vice President for Advancement and University Relations; five students are appointed by the Student Senate in accordance with the provisions of V.T.C.A. Education Code, Section 54.5031.

Student Financial Aid Committee

Charge
To consider, review, and approve financial aid and scholarship awards other than the Carr Academic Scholarships and other scholarship awards for which the selection of the recipients are specified by the donor. Any three or more members constitute a satisfactory Academic Progress Appeals committee.

Faculty appointed by the President upon recommendation to the Vice President for Finance and Administration from the Faculty Senate. Staff members and students are recommended by the Director or Financial Aid.

Charge
To review all appeals of traffic violations and traffic grievances with authority to void tickets.

University Center Board

Charge
Provide for student, faculty, and administrative input into the operation and activities of the Houston Harte University Center at Angelo State University.

Selection
Standing members are selected by virtue of position held. Faculty members are selected by the Faculty Senate, and three student representatives are selected by the Dean of Student Life from recommendations by the Student Senate.

University Curriculum Committee

Charge
The primary function of the University Curriculum Committee is to make recommendations to the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs on the curriculum and academic programs of the university. The University Curriculum Committee is not charged with executive or administrative responsibilities.

Selection
Appointed by the President upon recommendation from the Faculty Senate to the Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. The Chair is elected from among the full-time faculty committee members at the first meeting in the fall.

Term
Standing membership for administrative positions. Three-year staggered terms for faculty appointments. Chair to serve one year unless reappointed. One-year terms for non-tenured faculty members

Web Oversight Committee

Charge
General oversight of the University’s World Wide Web pages, Web Servers, and policies governing the use of these network facilities.

Selection
Appointed by the President upon recommendation of the Faculty Senate through the Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. Members are assigned due to specific areas of interest; one faculty representative from each college will serve as well as two student representatives. Chair will be selected in the fall.
