Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ASU Leadership Certificate Program?
The ASU Leadership Certificate Program offers leadership development opportunities for the students of Angelo State University. The ASU Leadership Certificate Program is sponsored by the Center for Student Involvement, part of the Division of Student Life.
What is this certificate program all about?
The certificate program was developed to encourage ASU students to participate
in leadership development workshops, and to recognize students who invest
time and energy in developing their leadership skills and knowledge.
The Bronze Certificate, covering basic leadership skills, is awarded
upon completion of eight workshops provided that the various required
sessions and journals are also completed. Other certificate programs
are also being developed. The initial certificates will follow the Bronze-Silver-Gold
pattern of Olympic competition, with each certificate guiding the student
through increasingly complex topics in leadership development.
Who is eligible?
Any ASU student may register and take any workshop whenever it is offered. You do not have to be an elected leader or even a member of an organization. Start when you are ready and take as many workshops as you would like. There is no charge for workshops or certificates.
How do I sign up for workshops?
Go to the ASU-LEAD web site at http://www.angelo.edu/asulead, fill out
the LCP registration form (only the first time you register for a session),
and the session registration form, and return the forms to the CSI in
Room 001 (UC Garden Level). You will need to provide your ASU Campus
Identification Number (CID#). You can also register by calling 942-2062.
When are workshops offered?
A new schedule of workshops is offered each semester and all required workshops are offered at least once each academic long semester.
Do I need to take workshops in any sequence?
No, records are kept of the workshops you attend in the CSI office. Required workshops will apply once you have completed the appropriate certificate level.
What are the required workshops?
There are four required workshops for the bronze certificate. They are marked with an asterisk in the ASU Leadership Certificate Program Guide and on the website schedule and designated as required after the title.
What is a journal and why is it required?
Students who wish to obtain the leadership certificate are required to maintain a reflective journal on their leadership journey at Angelo State as it relates to the workshops, leadership experiences, and the certificate program.
How often do I need to make a journal entry?
Students should submit a journal reflection approximately two weeks
after participating in a ASU LEAD workshop. Specific instructions on
journals will be provided at workshops and at the Center for Student
Involvement. See Journal Guidelines on ASU-LEAD web site.
What do I need to do to declare my interest in obtaining the leadership certificate?
Indicate your intention of pursuing the Bronze Certificate
in your first journal submission. Your first journal submission will
be acknowledged with a confirmation and welcome e-mail from the director.
Are there any other requirements?
Future certificates will require the completion of the two-part Leadership
Practices Inventory. The Leadership Practices Inventory is based on
national research on college students and provides certificate students
an opportunity to compare their practices with other leaders. The Gold
Certificate will also requires students to prepare and present a Personal
Leadership Model. Developing a Personal Leadership Model will serve
as a capstone experience that will serve a personal compass while engaging
in leadership in the future.
When will I be given my certificates?
Certificates earned in 2006-2007 will be awarded at the leadership ceremony to be held in late April. .
May I take workshops without pursuing certificates?
Absolutely! But you still need to indicate to register for the certificate program and register for all workshops in the CSI office or by e-mail.
