Leadership Certificate Program

Session Descriptions

The Bronze Certificate provides an introduction to new perspectives on leaders and leadership, suggests pathways for personal growth and development, and offers a range of individual and group leadership and life skills.

The Bronze Certificate will be awarded upon completion of eight of the following workshops, including the four required workshops, and submission of journal reflections for each workshop:

Personal Development Session* (Required for Bronze Leadership Certificate)

This session is one of the four required workshops for the Bronze Leadership Certificate. The ASU-LEAD staff member will assist you in developing a personal plan for successfully completing the ASU-LEAD certificate program. You need to register for this session just like all other workshops. The sessions are posted on the web site for either the first Tuesday or first Thursday of every month even though the actual sessions must be completed by making an appointment in the Center for Student Involvement, UC 001, Garden Level, or calling (325) 942-2062, or E-mail rick.greig@angelo.edu

Managing Stress

A manageable amount of stress can keep us on task and motivated to accomplish our goals and objectives. When we allow our stress level to become burdensome, however, stress can make us ineffective and may even lead to problems such as anxiety or depression. This presentation will define the concepts of stress and anxiety, and will examine causes and symptoms of stress-related problems and disorders. A variety of stress management options will be discussed, and if time permits, students will practice one method of relaxation therapy as a stress reduction technique.

Diversity 101

We live in an ever-changing world and it has become increasingly important for students to compete in a global society. Through interactive activities, exercises and discussion, Diversity 101 will introduce students to basic concepts associated with diversity and multiculturalism.

Managing Your Time (tentative)

The primary objective of this course is to teach student leaders or prospective student leaders how to properly manage their time. We will learn how to do this through exercises, class discussion and personal tips from the instructor. The term "killing time" will be discussed in the context of these time management skills.

Program Planning: Basics of Planning A Successful Event

Here I am in charge of the program and nobody told me what to do! Which comes first, the program or the room? Who should do the planning? How far in advance do we make arrangements? How much money do we need? Who does the setup for the program? Where do I go for help? This session is a must for anyone planning any type of program. Come and learn the basics of program planning such as knowing when and where to do a program, promoting an event on a shoestring, planning for the comfort of your audience, hosting a guest speaker or artist, and evaluating a program.

Developing Effective Communication Skills

Communication is the critical ingredient in efforts to improve quality, encourage innovation and initiative, and build productive teamwork. But good communication skills don’t come naturally. People may possess the technical skills required of their jobs, but need help with the interpersonal aspect of getting the job done. In this session, you will learn to open discussions in a way that encourages others to participate, promote a free exchange of innovative ideas and information, and summarize agreements and action steps so that all involved understand what needs to happen next.
