Ladies:
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the process which we call recruitment. This is a slightly crazy time in which you will be introduced to other young women that might just end up being some of the closet and dearest friends you will ever have.
Not so long ago, I was in the same position that many of you may find yourselves now: I was new to college, trying to decide where I fit in, and I wanted to know how I could make the most out of the next few years. Let’s face it, college is the last stop between childhood and adulthood; the paths chosen during the college years are the roads that we will travel for the rest of our lives. I knew that while I was in college, I wanted to do things that would have a positive impact on my future.
I came to college with a few preconceived ideas about sororities. I didn’t have any close friends that were in one, and I had never really thought that I might be interested in joining. Instead of considering a sorority, I joined other organizations. While I did manage to fluff out my resume, I never got the feeling that I was a part of something that would continue even after I left ASU. Without even knowing it, I was searching for a sense of sisterhood.
In the second semester of my freshman year, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to Sigma Kappa by a fellow collegiate I knew from another organization. Through a series of get-togethers and one-on-one interactions, I soon learned that sorority life was much more than a bunch of “bow-heads” having parties, it was a chance to interact with people who were just like me. Sorority Life was a chance to enrich myself though my sisters’ support and encouragement and a chance to give back to others the benefits I had received. These women, my new sisters, had a sense of purpose and definite goals. With the support of collegiate sisters, as well as local and national alumnae, we had an enviable network of support.
I have had so many wonderful experiences both in college, as well as in my after-college years, with my Sigma Kappa sisters. Not just from ASU, but also from chapters all over the country. I can’t think of any other way in which I could have met as many wonderful women as I did through Sigma Kappa. There is certainly no other way I could have ever experienced the bond that Sigma Kappa’s share through their precious sisterhood.
As you
go through your own recruitment, I hope that you find Sigma Kappa to be a place
where you can feel a sense of sisterhood and comfort during your college years.
Perhaps one day, you will be the one sharing your own positive sisterhood
experience with a potential new member.
In Sigma Kappa love,
Judie Lipsett
