Membership Information
How do I join Tri-Beta? 1. I'm so glad you asked. First, you should talk to a Tri-Beta officer or Dr. Jones about joining. 2. Next, sign up and pay your dues and membership fee. Each semester dues are $5 (what a deal!!!!). Membership fees vary depending on the number of biology classes you have had: If you have taken less than 3 biology classes, then you can join as an Associate member; if you have taken 3 or more biology classes and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in those classes, then you can become an Honors member. Associate members pay a ONE-TIME fee of $40; Honors members pay a ONE-TIME fee of $50. Also, Associate members can later upgrade to Honors-if they meet the requirements above-by paying an upgrade fee of $15. Advantages to Joining Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society: 1. Tri-Beta members have the opportunity to become acquainted with members of the Biology department faculty, which will be advantageous when students want to participate in research activities and ask for letters of recommendation. 2. Tri-Beta active members are nationally recognized as honor students in the field of Biology and have the opportunity to wear Tri-Beta honor cords at graduation. 3. Tri-Beta members are a group of friends who participate in a variety of functions together including 4. Tri-Beta annually sponsors 8-12 speakers who address various topics including the fields of medicine, dentistry, and allied health, research in biology, and professions in biology. These lectures are one of the many reasons our chapter has been recognized nationally several times as the “Outstanding Chapter in the Nation”. 5. Tri-Beta members are often the first to be considered when the Biology Department considers students for special recognition (e.g. nominations for Who’s Who, Nominations for the Presidential Award, Head of the River Ranch Scholarships, invitations to the Moon Lecture BBQ, departmental jobs, etc.) 6. Tri-Beta members have access to our large office facilities in the basement of the Cavness building for studying for classes, studying for the MCAT or DAT using Tri-Beta study materials, looking through our large selection of books and journals, or just a place to relax during classes. 7. Tri-Beta members are granted first choice in selecting among the science books donated by professors, students, etc. prior to Tri-Beta’s annual book sale. 8. Tri-Beta members receive subscriptions to the national Tri-Beta journal BIOS and our chapter newsletter Beta Bylines. 9. Tri-Beta members receive a certificate and membership card attesting to their membership, as well as a Tri-Beta decal for their automobile. |
