Committees

The University Center Program Council consists of an Executive Board (President, 2 Vice Presidents, and Secretary) as well as 7 independent committees. Each committee is lead by a student Chairperson responsible for adhering to certain criterion in order to achieve a balance in programming.

Each committee is responsible for the selection, publicity, and presentation of committee-sponsored events. Through involvement with any committee, members learn a variety of skills including, but not limited to, committee management, event planning, and event production. Most committee-sponsored programs are free, or of nominal cost, to ASU students and the general public.

Committee Functions

Arts Committee

The Arts Committee showcases work from both nationally recognized and student artists. The Arts Committee is also responsible for reserving the Houston Harte University Center Art Gallery for monthly art exhibits. In addition, this committee contracts art events in visual and performing arts, such as theatrical performances, dance companies, and chamber music.

Cultural Committee

The Cultural Committee sponsors events that provide information about diverse cultures, increase awareness of different world cultures, and help promote appreciation for diversity. The committee works to produce programs that address the educational, social, and historical aspects of different cultures that are fun and exciting to the ASU community.

Entertainment Committee

The Entertainment Committee sponsors a variety of programs such as comedians, coffeehouse entertainers (Club Café series), dance bands, and big name concerts. This committee also serves as the host of the annual Student Talent Show.

Recent concerts have included Blessed Union of Souls, Sister Hazel, Neal McCoy, Martina McBride, The Nixons, The Toadies, Clay Walker, The Breeders, Diamond Rio, Restless Heart, Survivor, Pat Benatar, Cheap Trick and John Waite, Exile and the Girls Next Door, Michal Martin Murphy, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and MTV Campus Invasion featuring Hoobastank, Lost Profits, and Ima Robot. The Club Café series features a coffeehouse-type performer on the last Wednesday of each month during each long semester. Performances are typically held in the UC C.J. Davidson Conference Center at a cost of $1 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Watch for monthly publicity for each performer, and make plans to join us!

Films Committee

The Films Committee hosts campus movie events, such as party at the pool, party with the stars, and the drive-in movie. These programs are free to ASU students. The committee also provides free access to some of the latest blockbuster movies in the DVD library each semester.

Publicity Committee

The Publicity Committee is responsible for helping each committee create publicity for events and for posting publicity materials around campus. The Committee works with the Vice President of Marketing to create a marketing plan for each event. The committee also maintains current information in all media outlets.

Recreation Committee

The Recreation Committee provides ASU students the opportunity to compete and have fun at the same time. The committee sponsors a variety of events such as poker tournaments (Ram Hold’em), basketball tournaments (3 on 3), sand volleyball tournaments, video game playoffs, Super Bowl parties, and the annual 5K fun run/walk. Although the committee’s main purpose is to host these types of campus events, committee members also have the capability to sponsor weekend camping trips, ski trips, and other special trips.

Spirit and Traditions Committee

The Spirit and Traditions Committee is responsible for hosting events that bring the students of ASU together. The committee honors the history of ASU by keeping traditions alive. Also, the Spirit and Traditions Committee works to discover new ideas as well as to plan events that help promote school spirit and traditions on the ASU campus. With the Angelo State Cheerleaders, the Angelettes, and The Ram Band being at the forefront of spreading school spirit, this committee expands on the basic ideas of these spirit groups by finding new and innovative ways to increase school spirit. The Spirit and Traditions committee also plans dances and socials and organizes volunteers for some of the most successful recruitment programs on campus.
