Welcome to Campus Recycling

Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future.

The primary responsibility of American higher education is to teach students to become leaders who can address significant social issues. In the environmental crisis, today’s college students face a challenge of unprecedented scope.

“Colleges and universities must exercise leadership in their communities and throughout society by modeling ways to eliminate global warming emissions and by providing the knowledge and the educated graduates to achieve climate neutrality.”
— The American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment

To this end, Angelo State’s recycling initiative is an important first step in educating ASU students about their roles as stewards of the environment. Recycling addresses a fundamental component of the sustainability movement: that our resources are not, in fact, inexhaustible. Recycling can contribute significantly, both on an individual level and within broad collective efforts, to reduce our consumption. Consider, for example, these facts about recycling.

  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours, or the equivalent of a half-gallon of gasoline.
  • A 60-watt light bulb can be run for more than a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling 1 pound of steel. In one year in the United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18 million homes!
  • If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save about 25 million trees a year.
  • Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper. All of these jars are recyclable!
  • Out of every $10 spent buying things, $1 (10 percent) goes for packaging that is thrown away. Packaging represents about 65 percent of household trash.

Please join in ASU’s efforts as the “Blue and Gold Goes Green” to protect our environment and educate our students about their responsibility for the most precious resource of all — our planet.
