ASU Bands to Celebrate Pastimes

The Angelo State University Bands, including the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, will celebrate summer, baseball, television and movies in a free concert, "Fancies and Pastimes," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, in the University Auditorium.

The Wind Ensemble will pay tribute to reruns with Michael Daugherty's Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball-inspired "Desi." They also will play Carolyn Bremer's homage to baseball, "Early Light," 20th-Century German composer Richard Strauss' "Serenade in E-flat," Paul Hart's ultimate cartoon soundtrack, "Cartoon," and John Philip Sousa's "King Cotton," a tribute to summer cotton festivals in the South and Midwest.

The Symphonic Band program will include Sousa's "The Liberty Bell," Frank Ticheli's "Sundance" and Sam Hazo's "Their Blossoms Down."

Dr. David Scott, ASU director of bands, will conduct the Wind Ensemble, and Daniel Smithiger, ASU assistant director of bands, will conduct the Symphonic Band. The band program includes more than 100 instrumentalists from academic interests across campus.
