Veteran’s Day Flag Retreat and Candlelight Vigil
Angelo State University ’s AFROTC program will recognize Veteran’s Day and honor the nation’s military with a flag retreat and candlelight vigil Friday, Nov. 10, at the ASU flagpole and Memorial Oak Grove.
Activities begin at 5 p.m. with the flag retreat ceremony and will continue with various speakers and the all-night candlelight vigil. Speakers will include Col. Brian Brown, commander of ASU’s AFROTC Detachment 847, and former B-24 pilot Leroy Olsak, who flew with the “Red Raider” bomber group in the Philippines.
The candlelight vigil will run from 6 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday and will include a changing of the guard every 30 minutes along with recognition of selected veterans who died while serving their country. The guards will be performing the same ritual as those guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The evening’s activities are open free to the public and are being sponsored by the Robert G. Carr Squadron of the Arnold Air Society, the Silver Wings group and Detachment 847. The ASU flagpole and Memorial Oak Grove are located in front of the Administration Building, 2601 W. Ave N.
