ASU Schedules Family Day Oct.7

Angelo State University will welcome to campus the relatives of all currently enrolled students during Family Day, which will culminate with the Rams football game Saturday, Oct. 7, against Eastern New Mexico.

A variety of activities are scheduled all day Saturday to allow parents and other relatives to see their sons and daughters in their university environment. Family Day is sponsored by the ASU Student Life Office, which may be contacted at (325) 942-2191 for more information.

Activities will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with an honors class demonstration lecture in Room B301 of the Porter Henderson Library, 2025 S. Johnson St., for families of Honors Program students. An Honors Program reception will follow at 11 a.m. in the Honors Lounge on the third floor of the library.

Lunch will be available for Family Day guests from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the ASU Food Service Center, 2201 Vanderventer. Cost for guests is $4.60 for the all-you-can-eat meal.

At 1 p.m. the ASU Planetarium will present "Point of No Return: Black Holes" in the Vincent Nursing-Physical Science Building, 2333 Vanderventer. At 1:15 p.m. the American Chemical Society and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will sponsor a Chemistry Magic Show in Room 200 of the Cavness Science Building, 2460 Dena.

The ASU Studio One drama group will make a presentation at 1:30 p.m. in Room 241A of the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive. Immediately after that presentation, representatives of the Communication, Drama and Journalism Department will take guests on a tour of the department's radio and television studios on the third floor of the library.

The Office of Residence Life will host "The Price is Right: Residence Hall Edition" at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of Texan Hall, 2104 S. Van Buren. There will also be an Art and Music Department Reception at 2 p.m. in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building. The International Education Office will sponsor a presentation of ASU study abroad experiences at 3:15 in Room B301 of the library.

Pre-game festivities will start at 4 p.m. with the ASU Alumni Association's Ram Jam at the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave. Free food will be available to ASU students, parents and alumni.

Then at 6 p.m. the Rams football team will take on Eastern New Mexico at San Angelo Stadium. Current ASU students may pick up free football game tickets for their immediate family members at the University Center Information Desk between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, Oct. 2-6. Tickets to the football game also will be available to family members during Ram Jam.

The ASU Athletic Department will begin a new Family Day honor by presenting an Athletic Family of the Year Award during halftime of the football game. The inaugural award will be given to the Weishuhn Family. The patriarch and matriarch of the family are Olin and Merlene of Wall. Olin and Merlene had three sons - Darrell, Clayton and Doyle - who went on to play football for the Rams. They also have three grandchildren that are current ASU student-athletes - Trey (football), Chase (basketball) and Lauren (basketball). Weishuhn family members will be recognized at halftime with Olin and Merlene receiving the award.
