ASU Distinguished Alumnus Named Wells Fargo Business Lecturer

Texas state legislator Mark Homer, a 1989 Angelo State University graduate and owner of Homer Enterprise, will deliver ASU's 2007 Wells Fargo Distinguished Lectureship in Business Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the Houston Harte University Center.

Homer's presentation, “Small Business is Smart Business,” will begin at 11 a.m. Sept. 18 in the University Center's C.J. Davidson Conference Center. The lecture is open free to the public.

Homer was raised in Paris, Texas, where in the early 1960's his father, Frank, opened the state's first Sonic Drive-In. After earning his M.B.A. at Angelo State University in 1989, he joined the family business the same year. Homer Enterprise now owns and operates 18 Sonic Drive-Ins in Texas and Florida, including ones in Ballinger, Stamford, Eastland and Cisco.

A 2007 ASU Distinguished Alumnus, Homer has represented District 3 in the Texas House of Representatives since 1999. His district includes Lamar, Delta, Hopkins, Titus and Red River counties in East Texas. He currently serves as the vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee and is a member of the Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism.

A strong supporter of Texas business, Homer's list of honors includes the 2003 Texas Economic Development Council Legislator of the Year award and the 2004 Marvin Gibbs Award for being an outstanding leader in the economic growth of Northeast Texas.

A 2005 Paris Junior College Distinguished Alumnus, Homer also holds a bachelor's degree in animal science from Texas A&M. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children, Hanna, Harrison and Hayden.

The Distinguished Lectureship in Business was established in 1995 and is underwritten each year by Wells Fargo Bank of San Angelo. Now in its 12 th year, the lectureship is designed to provide ASU students and the public with exposure to well-known business leaders and help grow the relationship between the San Angelo business community and ASU.

Past speakers have included Verizon vice president Michael H. Millegan, Time Warner Cable CFO Landel Hobbs, Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane, Jr., Hirschfeld Steel CEO David Hirschfeld, and Town & Country Food Stores, Inc. CEO Steve Stephens.

An eight-member selection committee representing ASU and Wells Fargo Bank chooses the speaker annually. Members of the 2007 selection committee are chairman Dr. Corbett Gaulden, dean of ASU's College of Business; Jim Raymond, president of Wells Fargo Bank of San Angelo; Dr. Tom Badgett, head of ASU's Department of Management and Marketing; Dr. Thomas Bankston, head of ASU's Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance; Dr. S. Murat Kara, assistant professor of economics; Tom Nurre, Jr., ASU news and information specialist, Dr. Sharynn Tomlin, associate professor of management; and Dr. J. Thomas Yokum, Jr., professor of management.
