ASU Meat Judging Team Nabs Ribbons at Houston Stock Show

Angelo State University’s Meat Judging Team had a solid showing, including two first place finishes, at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest earlier this month.

Competing against 15 other teams, the ASU team placed first in Team Lamb Judging and Team Overall Placing, while finishing 10th overall.

“The 2007 ASU Meats Team is a young team that is quickly developing the skills and judging abilities necessary to achieve great things in the fall contest season,” said Dr. Kirk Braden, assistant professor of animal science and team coach. “Lamb judging at the Houston contest was the most challenging portion of the competition and our students were able to analyze and segregate those classes quite well. I am extremely proud of the work effort and promise these students show.”

Also at the Houston competition were teams from Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State University, Colorado State University, Wyoming, Kentucky, West Texas A&M, Kansas State University and Iowa State University.

ASU team members hail from Pecos, Del Rio, Plano, Blanket, Brownwood and Robert Lee. They are Jennie Canon, Henry Dissler, Katie Lee, Ashlee Woods, Kari Hudspeth, Abel Cuellar and Michele Sanchez.

This was the team’s final competition of the spring semester. Contests will pick up again in the fall.
