Angelo State ROTC Unit Tops at GAFB Chili Cook-Off
Angelo State University’s AFROTC Detachment 847 claimed the top prize in the Intramural Division at the 33rd Annual Armed Forces International Chili Cook-Off Saturday at the Goodfellow AFB Rec Camp on Lake Nasworthy.
Competing against seven other military teams from Goodfellow, the ASU cadets burned the competition with a covert concoction they call “bulldog chili.” The recipe of the award-winning chili is classified information and is known only to the participating cadets, who will eventually pass it on to the next class of uniformed chili-cookers.
“It’s not super hot, but it does have a spice to it,” said Cadet Lt. Col. Ryan Kraus. “It has a different kind of Midwestern taste to it.”
While the chili ingredients remain Top Secret, the finished product has had a successful four-year run at the Goodfellow event. In 2004 and 2005, the ASU chili entry was good enough to earn the team invitations to the Terlingua International Chili Championship in Mexico, considered the Super Bowl of chili competitions.
In all, there were 19 teams entered in the Goodfellow contest competing with 78 recipes that were broken down into several different categories for chili, chicken, ribs and beans. For their efforts, the 12 members of ASU’s winning team were awarded a plaque and a traveling trophy they will keep until next year’s event.
