Angelo State Physics Students are Calling All Cars
Angelo State University’s Society of Physics Students (SPS) will host the first annual Edible Car Grand Prix Thursday, May 1, at the ASU Pavilion on Vanderventer Street.
The event will begin at 4 p.m. May 1 and feature races between miniature four-wheeled rolling vehicles (“cars”) made out of completely edible materials and entered by two-to-three person teams in several different divisions. The divisions include college students, student organizations, faculty and community members. Local K-12 students are especially encouraged to enter the competition and participation is free for everyone.
The cars will be rolled down an Official Acceleration Ramp on a paper-covered surface to avoid contamination. Each will be measured for distance traveled from the bottom of the ramp, physics merits, creativity and uniqueness of materials.
To be eligible, cars must have at least four rolling wheels, two axles and be made of edible materials. Each car must also be sturdy enough to make three passes down the Official Acceleration Ramp and must be completely consumed at the end of the competition. Vehicles that cannot make it down the ramp will be judged in the creativity and uniqueness of materials categories only.
All competitors will receive a certificate of participation. ASU student organization teams will be competing for an annual trophy. Non-affiliated ASU student teams and K-12 student teams will compete for gift certificates to Hastings. ASU faculty will vie for ribbons and bragging rights.
