Student Government Sponsors ASU Voter Registration
Angelo State University’s Student Government Association (SGA) is sponsoring a voter registration drive through Friday, Sept. 5, to make it easier for students to participate in the democratic process either in the 2008 presidential election or on local issues affecting them.
Students can register to vote locally 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 2:30-5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays through Sept. 5 in the SGA offices in Room 113 of the Houston Harte University Center.
ASU Student Body President Seth Chomout said this is the first of several voter registration efforts he is encouraging student organizations to organize between now and next spring so students can participate in elections at the local, state and national levels.
“People sometimes forget,” said Chomout, “that students are citizens, too, and that we have a right to be heard on issues that affect our future. One of our goals this year in the Student Government Association is to get ASU students more involved so their voices are heard.”
The SGA’s voter registration drive is being coordinated by Jeff Harris, who is chief justice for ASU’s Student Government Supreme Court.
Harris said it is important for ASU students to vote in San Angelo because that is where they live eight out of 12 months of the year and where they face the “more direct consequences from decisions made in local government than any other branch.”
“It is extremely important for our generation to realize the effect our government has in our daily lives,” Harris said.
By registering in Tom Green County at least 30 days prior to the fall general election, ASU students will be able to vote in the fall presidential election in San Angelo as well as in local races next spring.
