National Guard Outfits ASU Rugby Club Team
USA Rugby has awarded Angelo State University’s club rugby team a complete Army National Guard equipment kit that is valued at about $6,000 and designed to outfit and supply the entire squad.
To be eligible for the award, the team had to submit a letter of request stating why they deserve an equipment kit. Only two of the other 12 clubs in ASU’s division, Texas State University and Texas Christian University, received kits this year. ASU’s kit will include jerseys, shorts, socks, protective headgear, various practice and training equipment, practice and game balls, goalpost pads, a rule book and training materials for coaches. All the items will carry the USA Rugby and Army National Guard logos.
The ASU club rugby team began competing in Texas Rugby Union (TRU) Collegiate Division II in fall 1999. Except for that first season, the squad has advanced to the final round of the TRU Division II Championships and has won three state titles. Currently, 31 players, all ASU students, are listed on the team roster.
There are two regular season games left in ASU’s 2007-08 schedule, Feb. 2 against Baylor in Waco and Feb. 9 at home against TCU. The TRU championships are slated for Feb. 23 followed, hopefully, by the Western Territorial Collegiate Championships April 5-6 in Fort Worth.
