SOAR Offers ASU Students Head Start

Most Angelo State University students will arrive on campus this fall with tools to navigate their college experience, thanks to SOAR.

The two-day SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising and Registration) programs July 18-19 and Aug. 1-2 will help them ease into life at ASU. Activities begin at noon Friday and run through noon Saturday on campus.

“SOAR helps students make the transition to ASU by acquainting them with academic services, programs and faculty as well as meeting other ASU students and finding out about extracurricular activities at the university,” said Nolen Mears, dean of student life.

Students also will learn about ASU’s academic requirements and expectations while receiving advice from university administrators, faculty, upperclassmen and other incoming students.

If they have unique issues, students can address those during their sessions. They can discuss educational goals with advisers who will recommend course work and student orientation assistants who will help with class scheduling. After that, students will complete their registrations for the fall semester.

While students are busy with their activities, parents can attend special programs designed to familiarize them with the university and its objectives, programs and facilities. University staff members also will meet with parents to discuss college life at ASU, class schedules, testing, grading and standardized test results.

This weekend’s session is the fourth of five with the previous three accommodating 817 students. Mears said that, through the five sessions, about 1,300 students will participate in SOAR and an estimated 2,500 parents and guests will come with them for the weekends.

The current session is filled, but students can sign up for the final weekend on Aug. 1-2. Students wishing to participate in the final SOAR program should register in advance by contacting the Student Life Department at (325) 942-2191 or logging onto the ASU Web site at
