Angelo State Cheerleaders Win Camp Honors
Angelo State University’s cheerleaders can do a shout-out for each other after winning “Most Collegiate Squad” in Division II during the weeklong Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp at Texas State University in San Marcos.
The ASU cheerleaders returned Tuesday from the camp, which included about 50 teams made up of 600 campers from universities in NCAA Divisions I, II and III.
The 18-member ASU squad won the top award for displaying the best collegiate image as voted by the camp staff, said ASU cheerleader coach Kim Kuhns.
Kuhns said that the ASU squad also won the Division II sideline competition. The cheerleaders performed routines in front of a crowd to show how they would lead their own games with chants and cheers. She said they also placed fourth in a fight song competition.
“They were focused and ran everywhere as a group,” Kuhns said. The squad is led by co-captains Anna-Marie Parker from Cuero and Katy Kirchoff from Falls City.
Also included at the camp were daily cheerleading classes, dance classes and private coaching sessions where squads learned new cheers and fight song routines for the upcoming football season.
“They made huge leaps and bounds in camp and bonded as a team,” Kuhns said. “They represented ASU well.”
Pi Kappa Alpha-sponsored Roscoe the Ram placed fifth in the mascot competition behind representatives of Division I Big 12 schools. Roscoe is an anonymous ASU student who performs at ASU games and events.
Squads from most of the Big 12 universities competed along with units from Puerto Rico and Mexico. The camp was the first of nine being conducted around the country through August.
Kuhns said that she has learned from ASU Dean of Student Life Nolen Mears that the cheerleading squad will compete in the UCA College Nationals in Orlando, Fla., in January.
