ASU International Business Symposium to Explore the Global Economy
Dr. Pietra Rivoli, award-winning author and professor of finance and international economics at Georgetown University, will be the keynote speaker at Angelo State University’s 10th annual International Business Symposium Tuesday, April 22, on the ASU campus.
Rivoli will speak on “The Global Economy: Markets, Power and Politics of World Trade” at 9:30 a.m. April 22 in the ASU Houston Harte University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center. Her presentation is open free to the public.
The symposium will also include a seminar on “Business Opportunities in China and Mexico” hosted by Dr. Antonio Ruiz Ramirez, dean of graduate research and development at the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Chihuahua, Mexico. The seminar will run from 2-4 p.m. April 22 in the University Center’s Nasworthy Suite 203/204. Cost of the seminar is $10 per person.
Rivoli is the author of “Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power and Politics of World Trade.” The book was a 2005 finalist for the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award and is widely acclaimed by both the popular press and academic community as a groundbreaking study of globalization. Its numerous honors also include being named one of the best business books of the year by the Financial Times, Booz Allen Hamilton, Foreign Affairs, Library Journal and Amazon.com. The American Association of Publishers named it the Best Scholarly Book of 2005 in the finance and economics category and it is currently being translated into 12 languages.
A member of the Georgetown faculty since 1983, Rivoli also specializes in the ethical and social issues related to finance. Her recent research has been published in Business Ethics Quarterly and the Journal of International Business Studies. She holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and a Ph.D. in finance and international economics from the University of Florida.
Ramirez is also president of the Mexico Chapter of the Decision Sciences Institute. He has served as an operations management consultant for businesses in Mexico and the U.S., addressed business seminars in several countries and published numerous articles on leadership and international operations management. He holds a Ph.D. in both operations management and in international business from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education and the University of Houston.
The International Business Symposium is a joint production of the ASU Small Business Development Center, International Trade Office and Center for International Studies; ING Financial Advisers, LLC; and Gary Rodgers, CFP, CPA, ChFC. It is designed to stimulate international trade and aid economic development in the local area.
Since its inception in 1995, the ASU International Trade Office has been providing export and import assistance to small businesses throughout the area serviced by the ASU Small Business Development Center.
