ASU Cheerleaders Qualify for National Competition
Angelo State University’s cheerleader squad will compete in the Universal Cheerleaders Association college nationals Jan. 16-19, in Orlando, Fla.
The 18-member squad qualified by virtue of a video of their skills and cheers, according to ASU cheerleading coach Kim Kuhns.
“We sent in a video and were automatically placed based on the video,” Kuhns said. “We have a nationals routine which we are going to show at the Dec. 20 Rams basketball game. We did half of it at the homecoming football game. Now, we just have to clean it up and make it precise.”
The one-minute cheer and 90-second music routine includes squad tumbling, dance, basket tosses, pyramids and group stunts, Kuhns said. The squad will compete against all-girl NCAA Division II squads in the semifinals and will have to score high enough to advance to the finals.
The cheerleaders perform at ASU football, basketball and volleyball games. They also go to the ASU soccer games and cheer from the stands.
Squad members making the trip are Heather Bustos, San Antonio freshman; Paige Eddington, San Antonio freshman; Katie Fisher, San Antonio sophomore; Tonya Garza, Buda freshman; Emily Griffin, Floydada freshman; Niki Kestenbaum, Arlington freshman; co-captain Katy Kirchoff, Falls City senior; and Kirsten Lesko, Schertz junior.
Also Brianna Maldanado, Buda freshman; co-captain Anna-Marie Parker, Cuero junior; Kelly Payne, Mesquite sophomore; Kathy Pena, San Antonio freshman; Hayley Ragsdale, Houston freshman; Lauren Schoonover, Abilene junior; Felicia Villarreal, San Antonio freshman; Crystal Watson, Killeen sophomore; and Jordan Young, Clyde sophomore.
