ASU Physics Students Sponsor Sixth Annual Canned Food Drive
Angelo State University’s Society of Physics Students (SPS) will conduct its sixth annual “Can Roll” canned food drive to benefit the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank Nov. 20-21 and 24-25 in the Vincent Nursing-Physical Science Building, 2333 Vanderventer.
The hours for this year’s event are 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Nov. 20, 2-5 p.m. Nov. 21, and 2-6 p.m. Nov. 24-25. The public is invited to join the ASU community by donating canned goods and participating in the “Can Roll” competition. Contestants roll the canned item of their choice down a ramp constructed by physics students. The top long-distance rollers are awarded certificates and prizes.
The event has the additional goals of generating excitement about science, encouraging students of all ages to study science, and educating all participants in the physics of rotating and rolling objects. The food bank benefits from the SPS donation because it brings in many large-sized cans, which experiments indicate are the distance champions.
SPS is also encouraging local and area K-12 students to participate. The Can Roll food drive generates about 1,000 pounds of food every year for the food bank.
