ASU Plans Homecoming ‘Blast from the Past’

Angelo State University will celebrate the 2008 Homecoming week with a “Blast from the Past,” Oct. 12-18, culminating in the ASU-Southeastern Oklahoma football game on Saturday, Oct. 18, when distinguished alumni and homecoming royalty will be honored.

The week is filled with contests for students, the ASU Alumni Association’s Wells Fargo Homecoming Dinner, a pep rally, the annual bonfire, a parade in downtown San Angelo and the Ram Jam pre-game tailgate party.

The Alumni Association will honor 12 distinguished alumni, honorary alumni and outstanding faculty during the Wells Fargo Homecoming Dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, in the Houston Harte University Center. The dinner is open to the public and tickets are $25 each or $300 for a premium table of eight. Deadline for reservations is Oct. 9. Complimentary valet parking and a cash bar will be available.

Former San Angelo College football player and longtime ASU coach Jerry Vandergriff will be honored as the 2008 Distinguished Alumnus. Texas State Representative Drew Darby, Texas State Senator Robert Duncan and Texas Tech University System Chancellor Kent Hance will be named Honorary Alumni.

Alumni honorees will include Distinguished Carr Alumnus Dr. Michael Patyrak, Distinguished ROTC Alumnus Col. Ernie Felts and Golden Ex of the Year, Carrol Payne Nokes.

Faculty honorees will include Outstanding Retired Faculty Member Dr. C. Varren Parker Jr., and the 2008 Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award winners Dr. Mary Ellen Hartje, College of Liberal and Fine Arts; Dr. Gil Engdahl, College of Sciences; Dr. Tom Bankston, College of Business; and Dr. Susan Keith, College of Education.

The pep rally will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the Multipurpose Sports Complex and will include finals in a run-through sign contest and a step contest. The ROTC will take over at 9:15 p.m. for a torch parade to lead the crowd from the pep rally to Knickerbocker Road and University Avenue, behind Foster Field, where the bonfire will begin at 9:30 p.m.

The Homecoming Parade kicks off activities Saturday, Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. in downtown San Angelo at the corner of Fourth Street and North Chadbourne Street with the ASU Ram Band, the Downtown Association’s Wool Parade, ASU distinguished alumni and student organizations participating. The parade will travel south on Chadbourne to East Concho Avenue, turn left to South Oakes Street and return to Fourth Street.

The Alumni Association, in partnership with area businesses, will host the Ram Jam tailgate party from 3-6 p.m. at the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Drive. The pre-game event features live entertainment, prizes, contests and food. Ram Jam is open free to the public.

The Rams and Southeastern Oklahoma State will take the field for the Homecoming game at 6 p.m. in San Angelo Stadium. At halftime, the 2008 Homecoming Court will be introduced and the 2008 Homecoming King and Queen will be announced.

Between the third and fourth quarters, the Spirit Stick will go to the ASU student group that earned the most points during Homecoming week activities. Other winners also will be announced.

Other events during Homecoming Week will include a washer tournament and brisket cook off on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the ASU Pavilion. The Homecoming Week kickoff and “Hypnosis, A Journey Into the Mind,” with Keith Karkut will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13. Food will be served and the first 200 students at the event will receive T-shirts.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, students will vote for Homecoming King and Queen. At 6 p.m., they can participate in an interactive improvisational experience, Comedy Sportz at the ASU Pavilion.

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, step contest preliminaries will begin at 6 p.m. in the Houston Harte University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center. On Thursday, the “Think Fast Game Show” will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the C.J. Davidson Center.
