Variety of Events Highlight ASU Family Day

Angelo State University’s Family Day will have something for everyone as students’ relatives are invited to campus Saturday, Sept. 20, for a daylong slate of activities capped by the Rams’ football game against East Central Oklahoma.

Receptions, demonstrations and programs planned throughout the day by campus departments and student organizations will allow students’ families to see their children in the university environment. Family Day is sponsored by the ASU Student Life Office.

The day begins at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at United Campus Ministries, 2453 Dena Drive. An Honors Program reception follows at 10 a.m. in the Honors Lounge on the third floor of the Porter Henderson Library. The American Chemical Society will sponsor a chemistry magic show at 10:30 a.m. in Room 100 of the Cavness Science Building, 2460 Dena Drive.

Other morning events include a reception for parents by the Office of Residential Programs at 11 a.m. in the Community Room of Texan Hall, 2104 S. Van Buren St. The University Center Program Council will sponsor a reception and a preview of the “Heart Gallery of Northwest Texas” exhibit from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the University Center Art Gallery, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

“Politically Correct Fairy Tales,” performed by the Communication, Drama and Journalism Department’s Studio One drama team, is scheduled from 1:30-2 p.m. in Room 241A of the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

Other afternoon events are “Oasis in Space,” presented at 2 p.m. in the ASU Planetarium inside the Vincent Nursing-Physical Science Building, 2333 Vanderventer St., and “Game Show 2008,” sponsored by the Office of Residential Programs at 2 p.m. in the Texan Hall Community Room.

The ASU Alumni Association’s Ram Jam tailgate party will run from 3-5:30 p.m. at the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave., with complimentary food and non-alcoholic beverages for ASU students and their immediate family members.

Ram and Rambelle student-athletes will host the inaugural Angelo State Athletic Kickoff Carnival for Kids from 4:30-6 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium. Free T-shirts, hotdogs and drinks will be available and tickets to future ASU sporting events will be given away.

Current ASU students with valid student ID can pick up free football game tickets for their immediate family members at the University Center Information Desk between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, Sept. 15-19. Tickets for the 6 p.m. game, which is being sponsored by 1st Community Federal Credit Union, also will be available to family members during Ram Jam.

At halftime of the game, the ASU Athletic Department will present its third annual Athletic Family of the Year Award.
