Multicultural Center Consolidates ASU Services

Responsibilities previously shared by Angelo State University’s Office of Multicultural Activities and its Multicultural Center are being realigned under the latter to bring greater coordination and focus for the university’s multicultural initiatives.

ASU President Joseph C. Rallo announced the reorganization, calling it a natural progression in the university’s expanding efforts to address multicultural programming and to achieve Hispanic Serving Institution Status.

“Realigning these services will ensure that we best utilize our resources and provide a consistent message to the public,” Rallo said. “It is the next step in broadening our multicultural outreach as part of becoming a truly residential campus.”

Under the new organization, the Multicultural Center will oversee the Multicultural Advisory Council and Multicultural Center and Diversity Initiatives Committee; sponsor a variety of programs to broaden ASU’s multicultural offerings; produce a diversity newsletter; coordinate multicultural workshops and a related movie series; partner with the Center for Student Involvement on awareness programs on issues of importance to underrepresented groups; and work with the Office of Admissions to train its counselors on relationship building with Hispanic students and others from underrepresented groups.

The Multicultural Center will be administered by Joe Muoz, whose title will be “senior executive assistant to the president and assistant to the president for multicultural initiatives.” Muoz will also be responsible for coordinating ASU’s effort to achieve Hispanic Serving Institution status.

Universities that reach a 25 percent Hispanic enrollment and meet other criteria are eligible for Hispanic Serving Institution status, which qualifies them for additional federal funding opportunities that will benefit all students enrolled at those universities.
