ASU Cheerleaders Place Fifth in UCA College Nationals

Angelo State University’s cheerleading squad placed fifth in the Universal Cheerleaders Association College Nationals, Jan. 16-19 in Orlando, Fla., in their first appearance at nationals.

The ASU squad competed in the All-Girl Division II with 12 other teams, advancing from preliminary rounds to the finals on Sunday, Jan. 19.

The 18-member team performed a one-minute cheer and a 90-second music routine that included squad tumbling, dance, basket tosses, pyramids and group stunts, said Kim Kuhns, ASU cheerleading coach.

“That was a huge accomplishment considering this was our first year,” Kuhns said. “We know what we need to do to continue to improve.”

Squad members making the trip were Heather Bustos, San Antonio freshman; Paige Eddington, San Antonio freshman; Katie Fisher, San Antonio sophomore; Tonya Garza, Buda freshman; Emily Griffin, Floydada freshman; Niki Kestenbaum, Arlington freshman; co-captain Katy Kirchoff, Falls City senior; and Kirsten Lesko, Schertz junior.

Also Brianna Maldanado, Buda freshman; co-captain Anna-Marie Parker, Cuero junior; Kelly Payne, Mesquite sophomore; Kathy Pena, San Antonio freshman; Hayley Ragsdale, Houston freshman; Lauren Schoonover, Abilene junior; Felicia Villarreal, San Antonio freshman; Crystal Watson, Killeen sophomore; Jordan Young, Clyde sophomore; and Vanessa Castaneda, San Antonio freshman.

Castaneda, Ragsdale and Young were injured during preparations for the championships but recovered enough to perform the routines, Kuhns said.

The ASU cheerleaders perform at football, basketball and volleyball games. They also attend ASU soccer games and cheer from the stands.
