West Texas Press Association to Gather at ASU
About 75 members of the West Texas Press Association (WTPA) will attend the organization’s 79th annual Summer Convention Thursday through Saturday on the Angelo State University campus.
After a reception Thursday, the journalists will meet in the Junell Center Friday and Saturday for sessions pertinent to their business, including design techniques, handling Federal Housing Administration (FHA) advertising complaints and cutting-edge technology for newspapers. The technology session will be presented by Dr. June Smith and Dr. Cathy Johnson, ASU communication and journalism faculty.
At the president’s reception and dinner Friday night, attendees will hear former San Angelo Police Chief Russell Smith speak on his new book, “No Reason to Kill,” about a San Angelo murder that went unsolved for decades until DNA testing was used to break the case.
Also planned for the convention are a publishers’ roundtable with ASU faculty and students to give WTPA members a chance to showcase community newspapers and a golf tournament at Quicksand Golf Course.
The convention will wrap up Saturday with an awards brunch at 10:45 a.m.
