ASU Physics Group Completes Annual ‘Road Trip’
The Angelo State University Society of Physics Students’ (SPS) Peer Pressure Team has completed its fourth annual “West Texas Road Trip,” performing physics demonstrations at elementary and middle schools in communities throughout the region.
This year’s travel group was comprised of 13 ASU students and SPS adviser Dr. Toni Sauncy. The team trekked more than 900 miles through West-Central Texas and presented its program to more than 1,000 students, teachers, administrators and parents. The tour ran May 18-22 and included visits to schools in the Robert Lee, Buffalo Gap, Albany, Seymour, Hamilton, Lometa and Prairie Lea school districts. The team also conducted a day-long outreach program for multiple schools from Wichita Falls and its surrounding areas through the Region IX Education Service Center.
The West Texas Road Trip program is a public service designed by Angelo State SPS members to generate enthusiasm for the study of science and spur interested students toward paths that lead to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The SPS team presents a variety of physics demonstrations focused on educating students about scientific principles, while at the same time generating excitement and providing an informal and entertaining venue for them to enjoy.
ASU students participating in this year’s program were Jennifer Hendryx, Douglas Parsons, Daniel Bullock, Kunal Bhatnager, Daniel Taylor, James Matthews, Ethan Gully, Lacy Estes, Logan Hancock, Shivakumar Surendranath, Sterling Beeson, Allison McMahon and Jordan Watkins.
In the spring of 2007, the program received a Marsh White Award from the national SPS and a corresponding grant to help pay for demonstration materials. At the completion of last summer’s tour, the program received a Blake Lilly Award from the national SPS for outstanding physics outreach. This spring, Angelo State’s SPS chapter was designated an “Outstanding Chapter” by the national SPS for the seventh straight year.
