ASU Intramural Teams Advance to Nationals

Two Angelo State University intramural flag football squads won team championships and swept the MVP awards at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) regional tournament Nov. 13-15 at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

“Vixen” won the Women’s Division while “The Invisibles” took the team title in the Co-Rec Division. Both teams will advance to the NIRSA National Campus Championship Series Flag Football Championships Jan. 3-5, 2010, at the University of South Florida.

Vixen defeated a team from Tarleton State 19-6 and The Invisibles beat a Rice University team 34-12 in the finals. Also advancing to the tournament from ASU was Wolfpac, which lost in the second round to a Texas State University team, 38-12. The Fugitives and 10-Deep of ASU lost in pool play and did not advance to the tournament.

The Invisibles are the defending national champions in the Co-Rec Division. They defeated a team from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte in the finals last season after finishing second to UNCC the previous year.

ASU also had two Most Valuable Players (MVPs) as Vixen’s Danielle Low was the women’s MVP and The Invisibles’ Jason Reynolds won the men’s Co-Rec MVP award. Named All-Tournament were Vixen’s Whitney Monzingo and Alysha Currie in both the Women’s and Co-Rec divisions. The Invisibles’ Jerrell Jones and Laryssa Hise were All-Tournament in the Co-Rec Division and Women’s Division, respectively.
