ASU Study Jam Week Precedes Finals

The week before finals at Angelo State University, formerly known as Dead Week, has been supplanted by Study Jam Week, with a variety of academic resources and study support available.

Study Jam Week is co-sponsored by the ASU Office of Residential Programs and the Office of Supplemental Instruction. It runs Sunday, Nov. 29, through Sunday, Dec. 6, to support students as they prepare for fall semester final exams.

During Study Jam Week, last-minute review sessions will give students the opportunity to get answers to questions which have eluded them, share notes and discuss course content. On a wider scope, students can join workshops on test-taking strategies and easing test anxiety.

Residential Programs will also offer study sessions in the residence halls and other locations. Snacks will be served at many of these sessions.

Students can also take advantage of two ASU Tutor Center locations open now in the Centennial Village Sky Room, on the third floor of the residential hall’s tower, and the Texan Hall conference room, inside that residence hall’s main entrance. The Tutor Center is offering free tutoring in anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, physics, communications, government, history, psychology, animal science and other subjects. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 7-10 p.m., closed Friday and Saturday, and open Sunday, 4:30 p.m.-10 p.m.

Beginning Sunday, Nov. 29, Porter Henderson Library hours will be extended with cookies and coffee provided in the evenings by the Friends of the Library. ASU’s Writing Center will be open daily, except Saturday, Dec. 5. The Math Lab will also be open daily except for Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6.

When students need a break from studying, they can participate in other activities planned throughout the week. The University Recreation Department will conduct exercise classes and have extended hours at the Center for Human Performance (CHP). In addition to racquetball, the gym and weight room, cardio belly dance workouts, abdominals classes, martial arts fitness workouts and aqua aerobics will be available to students.

Sara Weertz, director of Supplemental Instruction, and Dallas Swafford, Enhancement Programs coordinator, direct Study Jam Week activities.
