ASU Student Groups to Compete for Hand in Imploding High Rise
Angelo State University students can compete to help implode the University Hall high rise building by participating in school spirit contests between Thursday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Oct. 18.
The ASU Office of Student Involvement has invited student-organized groups to join the contests after which eight representatives from the winning groups will assist Alvin New and his family when he pushes the button to implode the high rise on Oct. 25.
New, a San Angelo businessman and ASU alumnus, won the right to initiate the explosions in the former residence hall with a bid of $10,500 during this summer’s annual ASU Athletic Foundation Blue & Gold Dinner and Auction. Proceeds from the auction went toward athletic scholarships at ASU.
One contest between student groups will be to accumulate the most points by attending ASU home athletic events between Sept. 17 and Oct. 18. Student groups wishing to enter should register with the Office of Student Involvement in Room 001 of the Houston Harte University Center.
Groups must fill out an official roster with every group member’s name and campus ID number. Roster forms can be picked up in the Office of Student Involvement.
The groups will then attend ASU home athletic events, where each group member on the official roster will sign in at the beginning of each game. Every member who signs in will earn one point for each event. The sign-ins may close down at any time after the start of the event, so team members are encouraged to arrive early. The group that accumulates the most points will send four representatives to help with the implosion.
Another way for groups to win is by creatively showing their school spirit during Homecoming week at the volleyball game on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. and at the football game on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. One winning group from each game will be picked by the Implosion Committee as most creative. Two representatives from each of those groups will also join New and his family for the implosion.
