Rallo Named to Board of Accrediting Group
Angelo State University President Joseph C. Rallo has been elected to a two-year term on the board of trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges.
As a trustee, Rallo will be one of 77 board members elected to represent the 800 institutions that are members of the accrediting organization’s Commission on Colleges. SACS is the accrediting organization for universities in 11 states, including Texas. Angelo State is accredited by SACS.
Duties of trustees include setting commission policies, reviewing and determining the accreditation of institutions of higher education throughout the south, determining institutional dues and proposing changes of accreditation standards for a vote of the member institutions.
Rallo’s term on the board will expire at the end of 2012. Part of his duties will include serving on the Committees on Compliance and Reports, which evaluates various institutional reports and formulates recommendations regarding those colleges and their status with the Commission on Colleges.
In addition to Texas, other states represented in SACS are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Accreditation organizations, such as SACS, certify that the education provided by institutions within their regions meet the standards necessary for the awarding of undergraduate and graduate degrees. Accreditation is necessary for an institution to receive federal funds and for its students to be eligible for federal student aid and loans.
