ASU to Host Young Women’s STEM Conference
Angelo State University will host a day-long Expanding Your Horizons conference for girls in grades 6-12 on Saturday, Jan. 23, in various math and science labs and the Houston Harte University Center on the ASU campus.
The conference is part of a nationwide effort to increase the number of young women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and will feature 22 fun, educational and motivational workshops conducted by ASU faculty and volunteers. Attendees will each pick three workshops to attend and will also be treated to a networking lunch and a Super Science Demonstration Show performed by the ASU Society of Physics Students and student chapter of the American Chemical Society.
Luncheon speakers will be Megan Keen, a biomedical engineer with Ethicon Inc., and dermatologist Dr. Kay Johnston.
Parents and teachers accompanying the students to the conference will be treated to instructional seminars on ASU admissions and financial aid, a Planetarium show and a geology workshop.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in the University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. The welcoming ceremony will be at 10 a.m. in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center, then the students will move to the various ASU labs for the first set of workshops. The luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. followed by two more rounds of workshops and the 4 p.m. science demonstration show.
The conference is sponsored by the ASU College of Sciences and College of Nursing and Allied Health in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of Central Texas and with monetary support from Ethicon Inc. Attendance is open to all girls in grades 6-12 and they do not have to be Girl Scouts. Cost to attend is $15 for students and $5 for adults, and includes lunch. Pre-registration is required and financial aid is also available.
