ASU Begins Search for New Football Coach

Angelo State University Athletics Director Kathleen Brasfield announced Monday (Nov. 15) that the contracts for Coach Dale Carr and his coaching staff will not be renewed for next season.

“It is time to move in a different direction with our football program,” Brasfield said. “The search for a new head coach will begin immediately. Our goal is to fill the position as early as possible in December.”

In six seasons as ASU head coach, Carr had a record of 28-36.

Brasfield said the ASU Athletics Department will contract with Champions Search Firm of Jacksonville, Texas, to develop a list of qualified prospects for the head coaching vacancy.

“We are seeking a coach with proven leadership skills and a record of success for student athletes, both on the field and in the classroom,” Brasfield said. “We are committed to fielding a Rams football team that can compete with the top teams in the Lone Star Conference, one of the strongest football leagues in NCAA Division II.”

The Dale Carr era began with the 2005 season when the Rams went 9-3 overall and finished second in the LSC with a 7-2 record. The Rams qualified for the NCAA D-II Playoffs that season, losing 45-14 in the first round to eventual national runner-up Northwest Missouri State.

The 2005 season proved to be Carr’s best. In 2006 the Rams posted a 3-7 record, followed by a 2-8 record in 2007 and a 3-8 record in 2008. Last year the Rams went 6-5, and Carr was named the LSC South Co-Coach of the Year. In his final ASU season Carr led the team to a 5-5 record.

His coaching staff included Scott Clough, assistant head coach/offensive coordinator; Matt Fryar, defensive coordinator/defensive backs; Russell Gaskamp, assistant coach/offensive line; and Nathan Larned, assistant coach/defensive line.
