Former Coleman High School Students Receive ASU Scholarships

Two Coleman High School graduates have been awarded $500 Alan Davis Memorial Scholarships at Angelo State University for the 2010-11 academic year.

This year’s recipients are Tanner Cade Brooks, a freshman marketing major, and Angelina Nicole Jones, a freshman psychology major.

At CHS, Brooks consistently made the A-B Honor Roll and served on the Student Council as vice president of energy and the environment. He was also vice president of the Spanish Club, an officer of Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and a member of Future Farmers of America (FFA). He played on the Bluecats football and baseball teams and competed in various UIL contests, including Spelling, Social Studies, Calculator Skills and Number Sense.

Outside of school, Brooks did volunteer service at Camp Rehab, performed lawn care duties at his church and neighborhood clean-up, and helped care for his grandmother.

Jones graduated in the top 10 percent of her class at CHS and was a member of both the A-B Honor Roll and the National Honor Society. She was also Homecoming queen, voted Class Favorite and won the C Award for highest average in algebra. Her extracurricular activities included serving as class president on the Student Council, competing in both track and cross country, and being a member of the Spanish Club. She was also a drum major in the band and a varsity cheerleader.

Outside the classroom, Jones was active in Coleman County 4-H, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Alter Serving Committee and the Sacred Heart Youth Group. Her volunteer activities included Pennies for Patients, the West Texas Roundup for Rehab, Toys for Tots and working on annual Thanksgiving baskets, a Christmas food drive, Christmas giving tree, Lenten Rice Bowl and the Coleman Exes Reunion.

The Alan Davis Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to worthy Coleman County high school graduates attending ASU. The endowment was established in 1992 in memory of the late Alan Davis, a 1981 Coleman High School graduate and 1985 graduate of Angelo State.
