Johnson Street on ASU Campus Set to Close for 34 Hours Aug. 19-20

Johnson Street on the Angelo State University campus between Vanderventer Avenue and Dena Drive will be closed from 8 a.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 19-20) as ASU welcomes the return of students for Rambunctious Weekend and the start of fall classes Monday morning.

The temporary closure was requested to accommodate the high pedestrian traffic on campus Friday and Saturday as students move into residence halls and participate in Rambunctious Weekend activities, which this year will center around the student recreation center in the expanded Center for Human Performance (CHP) at 2050 S. Johnson.

“Our goal,” said ASU President Joseph C. Rallo, “is to provide a safe environment as new students learn their way around campus and participate in all the welcoming activities associated with Rambunctious Weekend.”

ASU has developed a traffic control plan for the temporary closure and provided a copy to the City of San Angelo.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, barricades will be put up on Johnson at Avenue N in the southbound lane and just north of Dena in both the north- and southbound lanes, according to John H. Russell, ASU’s director of facilities planning and construction. The barricades will be removed at 6 p.m. Saturday. Between those times, motorists should be aware of the closure and plan accordingly. Available options for north-south traffic are Jackson Street and College Hills.

Rambunctious Weekend was initiated in its current format in 2008 to welcome new and returning students to campus with a variety of special academic and recreational activities for students and families alike. Activities include the Fall Convocation at 4 p.m. Friday, the ribbon-cutting for the new recreation center at 5:30 p.m. Friday and various games and activities at the CHP Friday and Saturday.
