Another Great Weekend for ASU Judging Teams
Angelo State University’s Wool Judging and Livestock Judging teams both posted top finishes at national contests for the weekend of Feb. 12-13.
The Wool Judging Team took first place at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Intercollegiate Wool Judging Contest. The ASU team posted a score of 1,940 to beat out teams from Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University and Kansas State University.
Individually for ASU, Ryan Easterly of Water Valley finished first overall, third in Grading and sixth in Reasons; William Meyer of Schertz was third overall and second in Grading; Nicole Rumsey of Wall was fourth in Grading and ninth overall; and Clayton Fisher of Water Valley was eighth in Grading and 10th overall.
Other team members include Julliane Royce from Schertz, Corey Burson from Tuscola, Sondra Lohse from Converse, Casey Kruse from Mason, Darren Seidel from Sanderson and Kameron Haecker from New Branfels. The team is coached by graduate student Michael Boenig of Marion and undergraduates Katie Ede from Uvalde and Sharla Schmidt from Stonewall.
The ASU Livestock Judging Team also had a strong showing last weekend at the Dixie National Beef Judging Contest in Jackson, Miss. ASU placed third behind only Oklahoma State University and University of Arkansas – and placed second in both the English Breeds and Continental Breeds divisions. Other teams at the contest were University of Nebraska, Sam Houston State University, University of Missouri, University of Tennessee, University of Tennessee-Martin, Middle Tennessee State University, Panhandle State University, Fort Hays State University, University of Florida, Auburn University, University of Georgia, Michigan State University and Murray State University.
Individually for ASU, Beth Forehand of Carlsbad, N.M., placed second in the Continental Breeds division, Derrick Drury of San Antonio was fifth in Oral Reasons and Blaine Walker of Garden City was seventh in the English Breeds division.
Other team members include Meagan Stephens of Clinton Corners, N.Y., Logan Newsom of San Angelo and Scott Halfmann of Wall. Coaches are ASU instructor Kris Ede and graduate student Nathan Ray of Cameron, Ill.
