ASU ROTC to Host Veterans Day Flag Retreat and Candlelight Vigil

Angelo State University's Air Force ROTC detachment will recognize Veterans Day and honor the nation's military veterans with a flag retreat ceremony and candlelight vigil Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the ASU flagpole and Memorial Oak Grove.

Activities will begin at 5 p.m. Nov. 9 with the flag retreat ceremony at the flagpole, and then move to the Memorial Oak Grove for the candlelight vigil. ROTC commander Lt. Col. Stephen W. Magnan will make opening remarks, followed by this year's special guest speaker, Luciano Gonzales, a local World War II veteran. Following Gonzales's speech, ROTC cadets will begin reading biographies of ASU alumni veterans. This year's service will also honor Lt. Col. Karen J. Wagner, an ASU alumna who was one of the casualties at the Pentagon on 9/11.

After the first reading, attendees will be invited to the Mayer Administration Building for a reception provided by the ASU West Texas Collection and the Friends of the (ASU) Porter Henderson Library.

The candlelight vigil will run until midnight and will include a changing of the guard every 30 minutes along with the readings about ASU veterans. At the end of each reading, a single flower will be placed on the marker in the Memorial Oak Grove. The guards will perform the same ritual as those guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The evening's activities are open free to the public and are sponsored by the Robert G. Carr Squadron of the Arnold Air Society, the Silver Wings professional student organization and ASU's AFROTC Detachment 847. The ASU flagpole and Memorial Oak Grove are located in front of the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Ave. N.
