ASU to Host Week of Homecoming Activities
Angelo State University’s 2011 Homecoming Week will feature a multitude of student and alumni events beginning Sunday, Oct. 9, and culminating with the Rams football game against Midwestern State University on Saturday, Oct. 15.
This year’s Homecoming theme is “Roscoe Goes Pro.” Student organizations will choose a professional sports team and utilize the teams’ images when participating in Homecoming events.
Most of the events will take place Friday, Oct. 14, and Saturday, Oct. 15, highlighted by the ASU Alumni Association’s Homecoming Alumni Dinner Bonfire Ball and Bash on Friday in the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave. Activities will begin with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. followed by the Bonfire Ball dinner and auction at 6:30 p.m. The Bonfire Bash will start at 8 p.m. featuring live music, complimentary beverages and children’s activities.
Tickets are available from the Alumni Association for $60 each, and include admission to the dinner and the bash. Separate tickets for the Bonfire Bash only are $20 for adults and $5 for ASU students.
Henry Jackson, Class of 1994 and the senior director for international operations for Buckner Children and Family Services Inc., will be honored as the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus. Michael Martin, ASU’s director of graphics for over 30 years, will be named an Honorary Alumnus. Dr. Amanda Marshall, Class of 1994, and Col. James Ross, Class of 1988, will be recognized as the Distinguished Carr Alumna and Distinguished ROTC Alumnus, respectively. Nita Allen Archer, who graduated from San Angelo Junior College in 1945, will be honored as the Golden Ex of the Year.
Also recognized will be Dr. Peggy Skaggs as Outstanding Retired Faculty, Pam Darby for Distinguished Faculty Achievement and Adelina “Lina” Morales for Distinguished Staff Achievement. For more information and/or tickets to the dinner, call 325-942-2122.
On Friday, students, faculty and alumni will gather at the LeGrand Sports Complex for a pep rally at 7 p.m. followed by the annual Homecoming bonfire. A torch parade led by ASU’s ROTC detachment will begin at 8:45 p.m. and will travel from the pep rally site to the bonfire in the open area near Knickerbocker Road. During the pep rally, a run-through sign contest and the Step Contest finals will be held.
The annual ASU Homecoming Parade will wind through downtown San Angelo beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Harris Avenue and Oakes Street. After the parade, ASU’s Laura Bush Institute for Women’s Health will host an outdoor Zumba-thon at 3 p.m. in the Foster Field parking lot followed by the Alumni Association’s Ram Jam at 4 p.m. at the LeGrand Center.
The Rams football game against Midwestern State will begin at 6 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium with the first 100 students to arrive receiving free “Blue Out” T-shirts provided by the University Center Program Council. At halftime, the Homecoming Court will be presented, the queen and king will be named and the Spirit Stick will be presented to the most spirited student organization.
Homecoming Week activities begin Sunday, Oct. 9, with a brisket cook-off and washer pitching tournament from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. outside the LeGrand Center. The event is sponsored by ASU’s Delta Sigma Pi chapter, and proceeds will go to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital “Up ’til Dawn” program.
On Monday, Oct. 10, the Homecoming Committee will present the Homecoming king and queen nominees at 7 p.m. in the Houston Harte University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center.
On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the University Center Program Council will host Bongo Ball Mania from 1:30-5 p.m. in the Center for Human Performance, 2050 S. Johnson St. Participants will try to eliminate opponents with Nerf balls fired from air guns while advancing on their opponents’ position to capture their flag for the win. Open play will begin at noon.
An ice cream social is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the University Center. A “Think Fast!” game show-style contest will follow at 7 p.m.
Step Contest preliminaries are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. in the University Center. Also Thursday, the Homecoming Committee will conduct final elections for Homecoming king and queen.
