ASU Biochemistry Prof Published in Science Journal

A research paper co-authored by Dr. Edith Osborne, assistant professor of biochemistry at Angelo State University, was published in the Aug. 26 issue of Science, the weekly journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

The paper is titled “Expanding the Genetic Code of Escherichia coli with Phosphoserine,” and deals with using E. coli bacteria to manipulate the genetic coding of protein molecules. The process will impact future scientific efforts in protein engineering, molecular biology and disease research.

Osborne began work on the project when she was at New England BioLabs Inc. (NEB) in Ipswich, Mass. The project was a collaboration between researchers at NEB and researchers at Yale University led by Dr. Dieter Söll, a member of the National Academy of Sciences. A faculty member in the ASU Chemistry and Biochemistry Department since 2008, Osborne holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a doctorate in biochemistry from Texas A&M University. She was also a postdoctoral fellow at New England BioLabs Inc. from 2006-08.
