UIL Competitions Set for April Weekends at ASU

Angelo State University will host students from 59 Class 4A high schools during the 2001 Region 1-4A University Interscholastic League (UIL) Spring Meet April 20-21, April 23-24 and April 27-28 on the ASU campus, Bentwood Country Club, Quicksand Golf Course and Riverside Golf Club.

The one-act play and computer science competitions are scheduled Friday, April 20, and academic events are set for Saturday, April 21 on the ASU campus. Golf and tennis events are scheduled April 23-24 at Bentwood Country Club, Quicksand Golf Course and Riverside Golf Club. The UIL competitions will conclude April 27-28 with the track and field competitions at the ASU Multipurpose Sports Complex.

The one-act plays will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the ASU Auditorium. The computer science competition will be held on Friday, April 20, beginning at 3.45 p.m. in the Math-Computer Science Building.

The remaining academic competitions are set for Saturday at various times and locations on campus. Those competitions include informative speaking, persuasive speaking, prose interpretation, poetry interpretation, Lincoln-Douglas debate, spelling and vocabulary, ready writing, current issues and events, literary criticism, news writing, feature writing, editorial writing and headline writing.

Also on Saturday, April 21, students will compete in a number of science and technology events, including number sense, calculator applications, science, computer applications, mathematics and accounting.

The boys' and girls' tennis tournament will be played on the courts at Bentwood Country Club with first-round matches set to begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 23, and will continue through the next day.

The boys' and girls' golf tournaments will begin at 7:30 a.m. Monday, April 23, and will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24. Tournament play for the boys will be at Quicksand Golf Course and for girls at Riverside Golf Club.

The regional boys' and girls' track and field meet will begin with long jump and discus at 2 p.m. for the girls and at 4 p.m. for the boys Friday, April 27. The preliminaries in running events will begin at 6 p.m. The track and field competition will resume at noon Saturday, April 28, with field events beginning at noon and finals in the running events starting at 6 p.m.

Participants in the competitions include:

From District 1: Bowie, Burges, Chapin, El Paso, Parkland, Riverside and Ysleta high schools, all of El Paso.

From District 2: Canutillo, Clint, Clint Mountain View, Fabens, Pecos and San Elizario high schools.

From District 3: Amarillo Caprock, Amarillo Palo Duro, Borger, Canyon, Canyon Randall, Dumas, Hereford and Pampa high schools.

From District 4: Andrews, Big Spring, Levelland, Lubbock Estacado, Plainview, San Angelo Lake View, Snyder and Wolfforth Frenship high schools.

From District 5: Azle, Burkburnett, Mineral Wells, Wichita Falls, Wichita Falls Hirschi and Wichita Falls Rider.

From District 6: Fort Worth Boswell, Fort Worth Brewer, Grapevine, Justin Northwest, North Richland Hills Birdville and Southlake Carroll.

District 7: Arlington Heights, Dunbar, Eastern Hills, North Side, Polytechnic, South Hills, Southwest, Trimble Tech, Western Hills and Wyatt high schools, all of Fort Worth.

District 8: Brownwood, Burleson, Cleburne, Crowley, Granbury, Joshua, North Crowley and Stephenville high schools.
